16 mile run

Submitted by on August 31, 2009 – 12:01 pmNo Comment

My 16 mile run was tough. I thought I would have been able to get through it pretty good. My start was very good. I felt like I wasn’t pushing too hard to get through it. I was averaging a 10 minute/mile pace even with the heat of 97 degrees during the first lap. I had my camelback, my gels, my rodiola and 70 oz of fluid to last the first lap around Miramar Lake. I noticed the lake being bare. I only saw about 5 people walking and about the same amount of people riding/rollerblading around the lake.

As I got to finish the first lap, I had to refuel and add more ice to the camelback to make the drink colder. I kept my time running during the break so I had some slowdown there. My pace seemed to slow but not too much. The heat was letting up a little bit. My legs were ok I felt refreshed after the first lap with a gel down and some rodiola. I also took with me some Nutrilite drink I always have which is similar to Gatorade.

The second lap was good. I didn’t feel that bad through mile 10. I kept going and got to the car for the last refuel and more gel and rodiola. And I took two bottles of Nutrilite drink with me. I think I was set to finish the last 6 miles. I planned on going 3 miles in and then coming back rather than to do the 5 miles then add 1 more mile.

I decided I was going to do this one backwards instead of the normal way I usually run it. I was going good until I got to mile 11.75-12 miles. I had a chest cramp. I didn’t know if it was pain or something else. I tend to have gas when I run so farting and burping happens during my runs. So I think I got to the point where I had to burp and the pain went away. Good thing because the pain cause me to walk and slowed my pace down.

My original goal of 3 hours seemed to start catching up to me. I knew a 10 min/mile pace was ambitious of 16 miles. I had to loosen my heart rate monitor thinking that it was causing my cramp. I felt that I didn’t want to walk too long because it would make my muscles tight and then I wouldn’t be able to run any longer. As I got to mile 13 I changed my mind about doing the 3 miles in and 3 miles back. I just did another lap and then I would have to finish 1 mile.

I think I got some small burst of energy with the 1 mile to the lap. I got to the finish line and I knew that running backwards was weird because the distance wasn’t correct on my gps watch. I was at 14.75 and now I had to run 1.25 more. I hate that. So I had to figure running 1.25 longer and to do that I had to run .63 in and come .62 to finish. That was tough because watching how much time was left made me push it a little bit more. I finally got to the end and my gps watch showed me it was 3 hours. I knew it was a little longer but that’s fine. I was glad I was done.
