January 16, 2010: 8 mile run with Team in Training

I woke up about 5:30 this morning. I had a good breakfast. Just some cereal. I was out the door about 6:15 and off to Solana Beach. This was a new location for me to start at. It was only 8 miles. It seems so short and even though the group wasn’t as large as some of the other runs, it was a good one.

I seem to be somewhat nervous at the start of the training runs because I know if I join the C group that I will be getting a good workout. I know its tough with them. They are on the verge of where I can try to max out my run. I really can’t keep up entirely but I guess its better than running with the B group at times. I feel like I want more when I run with them. I like to be with them at the longer distances but with the group C is where I go.

We started off pretty mild, not too fast for me. We started off on a little hill into a neighborhood going about a 9 min/mile pace. As the group quickened we were down to about a 8:30 min/mile pace. That was tough for me especially with my issues with my callous and just because I can’t keep up. I feel like when I push myself that I know I am more prone to injury.

The run was fairly good. As we got to the 101 highway I remembered where we were. I have been on this part of the course before. We were running north and then coming back. The downhill was nice but then we met some good uphills. I hate hills because they push my heart rate a lot higher. I tend to slow down a lot and my heart rate just sky rockets. I was glad when we got to the halfway that it was going to be easier because it was going to be more downhill the way back.

I had my fuel belt with drinks and it did come in handy. I knew I was going to need fluids and we didn’t have any aid during this run at all. So I had one power gel and just some gatorade type drinks and I was good. I did fill all 4 of the fuel belt containers but only brought 2 on the run.

I was started to feel my calves tighten up a bit at around mile 3 or so. I was just hoping that it wouldn’t cause any serious delay or issues as I ran back. It did bother me but I kept going. I finally finished and felt good. Now it is only 1 week left.

After the run, I talked with one of the coaches that I have never talked to because she runs normally with the rock n roll group. I was asking her about finding your sweat rate and to help with how to hydrate and take fluids in based on that. I need to do that some time.

I also asked another person about the tri team. I think she was a mentor and I asked her about the workouts and the demand of the training. She said it was 3 coached sessions with 3 on your own with 6 days a week for about 3 months. I don’t know. I want to do it but I think it is tough.

What do you think? Should I do the triathlon? Or maybe the century bike ride?
