The importance of nutrition

Submitted by on September 28, 2009 – 10:37 amNo Comment

Yesterday I was going to go for a 24 mile run and ended up not finishing. I blame it on my pre race nutrition and nutrition during the run.

I left at 9 in the morning and knew it was going to be 5 hours long. I woke up at 730 in the morning and had my normal breakfast of cereal. I hate being full during a run and not have gone to the bathroom before hand also. I made sure that I did those before.

The day before I felt that I did not eat enough. I didn’t think about it at all before hand until after the run. Nutrition is an important part of anything especially running and how much running somebody may do. I overlooked my nutrition for that day and I desperately needed it on my run. I felt fine for the first 7 or so miles. The heat of the day may have contributed to it and I did have enough to drink in my camelbak.

I actually felt it at around mile 12. I was coming around lap 2 of Miramar Lake and I was feeling out of energy. It may have been my motivation and I did not have it. I took in a nutrition bar and it didn’t help much. I called it quits at mile 13.5. I was walking and didn’t have it in my to continue.

I felt out of it and knew that I wouldn’t be able to get to mile 24 today. I called my brother to come pick me up.

As of now I know that I should have eaten more the day before. I should have had my gels on the run. Those were the two most important parts of my nutrition. I need to keep this in mind next week for my 26 mile run.
